Register a kitchen printer
Add a printer record in Printers so a station can send jobs to it.
Kitchen printers are registered in their own place — Store settings → Printers — not inside the KDS section. A printer station can only print once the printer here is set up and reachable.
Note
Printers supports Star TSP100-family receipt printers and most generic 80mm ESC/POS printers. Pick which one you have in the Printer type field below. If you're not sure your hardware is compatible, check with support before buying.
Two ways a printer can be connected
The first thing the form asks is How is it connected?:
- On the network (Wi-Fi / Ethernet) — the printer sits on your venue's network with its own IP address. Any till or terminal can send it work.
- Connected by cable to a till — the printer is plugged straight into one till with a USB cable. That till is the only device that can print to it, so you also pick Which till is it plugged into?. There's no IP address to find.
Tip
A cable printer needs one thing doing on the till itself: plug it in, then on that till go to Settings → Receipt printer and pick the printer there. Kitchen tickets then print from that till automatically.
Register a printer
Go to Store settings → Printers and add a printer. The form asks for:
- Name — a label so you can tell printers apart, e.g. "Kitchen" or "Front counter".
- How is it connected? — network or cable, as above.
- Printer type — which language we speak to the printer in. Star TSP100IV is the default and is right for Star hardware; choose Generic ESC/POS (80mm) only for a non-Star 80mm network printer. Getting this wrong prints garbled receipts, so leave it on Star unless you know your printer isn't one.
- IP address (host) — network printers only: the printer's address on your
network, e.g.
192.168.1.50. You can leave this blank for now and fill it in once you know it. See Find a kitchen printer's IP address. A cable printer has no IP address, so this field disappears. - Port — network printers only. Defaults to 9100, the standard for these printers. Leave it unless you've changed it on the printer.
- Which till is it plugged into? — cable printers only: the till the USB cable runs to. If a cable printer shows "Cable · not plugged into a till — edit to fix" in the list, this is the field to set.
- Paper width — 58, 72 or 80 mm, matching the paper the printer takes.
- Location — if you run more than one site, which site the printer is at.
Tip
You don't need the physical printer in front of you to register one. Create the record now and come back to add the IP and finish pairing once the printer is on site and powered up.
Finding a printer once you have a few
If you run more than one site, the printer list has a Location filter at the top. Pick a site to see only that venue's printers, or leave it on All locations — which also shows any printer you haven't assigned to a site.
