Use a till as a kitchen display
Turn a till tablet into a full-screen kitchen display for one station, and switch it back.
A till tablet can double as a kitchen display. Give it the Kitchen display mode, choose which station it shows, and the whole screen becomes that station's kitchen display. It shows the same tickets as a kitchen screen opened from a screen link, without needing a separate device or a web browser.
Note
Kitchen display on a till must be switched on for your account, and KDS must be on as well, because the screen shows one station's tickets. If you don't see a Kitchen display mode, ask your account manager.
Before you start
- KDS is set up, with at least one kitchen station.
- The device is a till. Card machines can't run Kitchen display, so the option isn't offered on them.
- The till's app is version 5.0.20 or newer. Update it on the till under Settings → App update. An older app doesn't know this mode, so the Kitchen display option is greyed out for that till and tells you which version it's on. The device's panel under Devices shows it too, as Tillable app v….
Set a till up as a kitchen display
- 1
Give the till the Kitchen display mode
In Store settings → Devices, click the till and set Operating mode to Kitchen display.
If the option is greyed out, the reason is written next to it:
- Kitchen display on a till is switched off for this account — ask your account manager to switch it on.
- Needs KDS turned on — KDS isn't on for your account yet.
- Needs the till app 5.0.20 or newer — update the app on that till, then come back.
- 2
Choose its station
Once the till is on Kitchen display, a Station setting appears below the mode. Pick the station this screen should show.
Several screens can show the same station — one at each end of the pass, say. They show the same tickets, and bumping a ticket on one clears it from all of them.
- 3
Check the till
The till switches to the kitchen display, and new tickets for that station appear as they're sent.
Switch a till back
Tap the top-left corner of the screen five times within three seconds. The mode picker opens and you can choose any other mode. There's no passcode, so nobody gets locked out, but the gesture is tucked away so it doesn't get pressed by accident during service.
If Kitchen display on a till is switched off later
If Kitchen display on a till is switched off for your account, every till you'd put into the mode goes back to running as a normal till within a minute — you don't need to touch them. In Store settings → Devices the mode still shows as Kitchen display, greyed out with the reason, and the station setting is kept, so switching the feature back on puts the tills straight back to work.
If the till shows a message instead of tickets
- No kitchen station yet: the till hasn't been given a station. Choose one on the device in Store settings → Devices.
- This station has been archived: choose a different station for the device.
- This station needs a new screen link: open Stations, pick the station and create a new kitchen screen link, then reopen the screen.
- Kitchen display isn't switched on: Kitchen display on a till, or KDS, isn't on for your account. Tap the top-left corner five times to switch the till to another mode.
- This device is no longer paired: pair the till again.
