Set a device's mode, location and printer
The settings in a device's slide-over panel — each saves the moment you change it.
Click a device in the list to open its settings panel — a slide-over on the right. It has three things you always set: Location, Operating mode and Receipt printer, plus a Station dropdown that appears only on a device running Kitchen display. Each is a dropdown that saves the moment you change it — there's no separate Save button, and you'll see the panel update to confirm.
You can also rename the device from here: click Rename next to its name at the top of the panel. Leave the box empty and save to go back to the name it was given automatically. Underneath the name you'll see the device's model and serial number — see Devices.
Set the operating mode
The mode decides how the device behaves — which screens and actions it shows.
- 1
Open the device
In Store settings → Devices, click the device's row to open its settings panel.
- 2
Find the Operating mode dropdown
Look for the Operating mode section. Its dropdown lists your modes, with No mode — uses Standard at the top.
- 3
Pick your mode and it saves
Select the mode you want. The change is applied straight away — no Save button. The panel refreshes to show the new mode.
A device with no mode picked runs Standard. See Modes for what each mode does.
Some modes only work on one kind of device. A mode built for a till isn't offered on a card machine, and the other way round — you won't see it in the dropdown at all. That isn't something you can change here: what a device is was decided when it was paired.
A greyed-out mode is different. If a mode is listed but greyed, it needs something switched on first, and the line underneath it says what. Turn that on and the mode becomes selectable.
Set the station (Kitchen display only)
If you've put a till into Kitchen display, it shows one kitchen station's tickets instead of the till. A Station dropdown appears in the panel so you can say which one.
- 1
Set the mode to Kitchen display first
The Station dropdown only appears once the device is on Kitchen display — a station has nothing to do on any other mode.
- 2
Pick the station and it saves
Select the station this screen should show. It saves on change. See Stations.
Several screens can show the same station. Put two kitchen screens on the same station — one at each end of the pass, say — and they show the same tickets. Bump a ticket on one and it clears from both.
If a station is archived after a device was already showing it, the device keeps it and the dropdown shows it marked (archived) so you can see what happened and move the device somewhere else.
Set the location
Single-site businesses don't see this section. With one location there is nothing to choose between, so the Location dropdown only appears once you have a second site. Your devices stay on your one site automatically.
- 1
Open the Location dropdown
In the same panel, find the Location section. The dropdown lists your sites, with No location at the top.
- 2
Pick the site and it saves
Select the site this device trades at. It saves on change. Location drives reporting and any site-scoped settings, and it filters which printers you can pick below. See Locations.
If this device still has an open cash drawer, the move is refused. A drawer session belongs to the till it was opened on, so moving that till away would leave its float where nobody can count or close it. The same applies to a site's shared drawer, which any till at the site can close — moving a device away while the shared drawer is open is refused too. The refusal names each drawer in the way: which till, the day it was opened, and its float. Close those drawers first, then move the device.
Other tills' own open drawers don't stop a move — each till can close its own drawer wherever it stands. Clearing the location (No location) is always allowed — an unassigned device can still see and close every drawer.
Set the receipt printer
- 1
Set the location first
Set the device's location (above) — the printer list is scoped to printers at that location, plus any printers not tied to a location.
- 2
Open the Receipt printer dropdown
Find the Receipt printer section. Each option shows the printer's name and its IP (e.g. "Front counter · 192.168.1.100"). The top option is No printer — use device Settings.
- 3
Pick the printer and it saves
Select the printer this device should print to. It saves on change. See Printers.
This is the receipt printer only. Kitchen tickets don't depend on it: each station chooses its own printer, and any till at the site carries the ticket there — so you can point a till's receipts at the bar printer while its food orders still print in the kitchen. If you have several kitchen printers, you do not need one till per printer. See Printer stations for where a station's printer is set.
Mode and other changes sync down to the device automatically — you don't reconfigure the device by hand. After you change the mode, the device picks up the new layout the next time it syncs.
Menus don't need assigning per device — they're available on every device automatically. To limit a menu to certain locations, do that from the menu's own settings.
Note
If a dropdown change doesn't seem to stick, an error message appears in the panel and the value reverts. Check the device is online (shown in the list) and try again.
