Pair a device

Connect a physical till or terminal to your account with a short pairing code.

Pairing connects a physical till or terminal to your account so it can take sales and pull its settings from the portal.

  1. 1

Name it and choose how long it lasts

In Store settings → Devices, the Pair a device card has a name box and a dropdown side by side. The name is optional and only helps you tell codes apart. In the dropdown pick 3 minutes, 1 hour or 24 hours — three minutes suits a device in front of you; pick longer if you're sending the code to someone to use later.

  2. 2

    Click Pair a device

The code appears straight away, along with how long it has left. The name box clears for the next code; the length stays as you set it.

  3. 3

Enter the code on the device

On the till or terminal, choose Sign in, then Enter device code, and type the code shown in the portal.

  4. 4

    Wait for it to appear

Once the device connects, it shows up in your devices list.

Note

Pairing on its own doesn't let a terminal take card payments — card processing has to be active on your account too. See Set up payment processing.

Naming a code

Before you generate a code you can give it a name — "Front counter", "Camden install". The name shows next to the code in the list below, which is what makes several codes at once manageable. It's optional, and it can't be changed once the code is made; generate a new one instead.

Making several codes at once

Setting up more than one device? After a code appears, click Generate another to make the next one without closing. Each code works once, and they all stay listed below until they're used or they expire.

Codes you've made but not used yet

Any code you've generated and nobody has used yet is listed on the Devices page under Codes waiting to be used, with how long it has left. Click Show code to read the digits again — useful if you generated one, walked away and forgot it. Remove bins one you no longer want outstanding. Codes also disappear from the list on their own once they're used or expire.

Signing in instead of typing a code

On the device you can also choose Sign in and enter your portal email and password. The device fetches its own code and pairs itself, so there's nothing to type in from the portal. The devices list records which way each device joined.

Setting up several devices

A pairing code covers one device. If you are bringing a few online at once, set a join code instead: your own 8 digits, reusable until you change or remove them.
