Service charge troubleshooting
Why a service charge isn't showing on the till — and what to check in your setup. Charges are configuration only today.
Heads up
My service charge isn't showing on the till. That's expected right now — and it isn't something you've set up wrong. Service charges are configuration only today: you can create a charge and apply it to a menu, but the till does not yet add it to a bill, and it does not appear on a customer's receipt. Applying charges at the point of sale is still to come. There is nothing to fix on your side, and no setting that will turn it on.
What this means day to day
- Nothing you set up on the Service charges page is currently charged to a customer. You can't accidentally over-charge anyone with it.
- If you need to collect service today, take it the way you do now (for example as a product on the menu) rather than waiting on this setting.
- The charges and menu choices you make now are saved, so your setup will already be in place when the till starts using it.
Checking your setup is right for when it does go live
Even though nothing reaches a bill yet, it's worth having the setup correct:
- The charge is actually applied in that menu's Settings → Service charge — creating it on the Service charges page is not enough, it must be picked on the menu.
- The menu carrying the charge is the one that serves the order type you intend. A charge sits on a menu, not on an order type, so a shared menu would eventually charge every order type it serves. To keep it to one order type, split into separate menus — see Service charge on one order type only.
I picked the charge but never pressed Save — did it save? Yes. The service-charge picker saves the moment you choose, so there is no Save step for it. If you run more than one site you will also see a Save button in that page's top bar: that one belongs to the Available at locations card below, it stays greyed out until you tick or untick a site, and it has no effect on your charge.
What is the "When this menu shows" card at the top of a menu's Settings? It sets the days and times a menu is on — see When a menu shows. It has nothing to do with service charges.
