Owner settle — close a bill without paying
A hidden code pad on the till that lets the owner close their own bill at £0, with a reason, keeping stock right and the bill on the end-of-day but out of Transactions.
Owner settle is for the owner's own bills. When you eat or drink at your own venue, the bill still needs closing so the table frees up and the stock comes off. Owner settle closes it with nothing charged: it is recorded as a £0 bill with a 100% Owner settle discount, so the items count as sold that day and it shows on your end-of-day, but it stays out of Transactions.
It is switched on per venue by Tillable. Once it is, you will see Settings → Owner settle in the portal.
Only the account owner can see it — the login the venue was set up with. Colleagues you have invited to the portal, including admins, do not see it in the menu and cannot open the page, change the code or read the list of bills closed with it.
Set it up
- Open Settings → Owner settle.
- Turn the switch on.
- Set a code of 6 to 10 digits. It is stored scrambled and never sent to the tills. Enter a new code at any time to replace it; the old one stops working straight away.
- Type the email that should hear about every use, or leave it blank for no email.
The corner on the till only works once the switch is on and a code is set. The page tells you when it is live.
Use it on the till
- Open the bill as normal, so you can see Pay, Cash and Split.
- Tap the top-right corner of the screen three times quickly. There is no button there; the tap area is invisible. If your venue uses Manager override, you'll see a small shield icon a little to the left of that corner — that's a different button. Tap right in the corner, not on the shield.
- Pick a reason — Own use, Gift or Staff — enter the code and tap Close bill. The button stays off until you have picked a reason.
The bill closes. Nothing is charged, no receipt prints, and the table frees up.
What it does and does not do
- Stock comes off exactly as for a normal sale.
- It is a £0 bill. It carries a 100% discount named Owner settle with the reason (for example "Owner settle · Gift"). Item sales count the items as sold that day, the discounts total shows the full value, and nothing is added to your takings or your cash.
- It shows on your end-of-day as its own Owner settles line: how many bills, and what they would have cost. No VAT is recorded on them, because nothing was charged.
- It stays out of Transactions on the till and in the portal.
- The reason is for your accountant. HMRC can treat goods you take for your own use, or give away, as a supply for VAT. The reasons give you and your accountant the data to work that out — check with them how it applies to you.
- Full bills only. If part of a bill is already paid, or a split share is being paid on a card machine, the bill cannot be closed this way.
- No points. Nothing was charged, so nothing is earned, and other discounts are replaced by the Owner settle one. The amount shown is what the bill would have cost.
- The till must be online. The code is checked by our servers.
- The table visit still shows as a visit in table reports, with nothing spent, because the kitchen was sent its tickets.
Keep the code safe
If someone else learns the code they can close a real customer's bill at £0, and a stock count will not catch it because the stock is right. Three things protect you: every use is listed on this page with the time, table, reason, till and who was signed in; it shows on the end-of-day; and the email tells you the moment it happens. If you did not expect an email, change the code straight away.
Ten wrong tries on a till locks that till out of the code pad for fifteen minutes.
The list on this page
Every bill closed with the code, newest first, with the date and time, the table, what it would have cost, the reason, which till, and who was signed in. The total at the top covers everything ever closed this way.
Bills closed before October 2026 were not recorded as £0 bills, so they are only on this page and not on those days' end-of-day.
If you have more than one site
When you run more than one site, the list and the total follow the site picked under the Tillable logo, and each bill says which site it was settled at. On All sites you see the whole business.
