Receipt layouts
Start from a ready-made receipt design, change it to suit you, preview it with real data, and test it on a real printer.
Receipt layouts is where you design your customer receipt. You start from a ready-made design, change anything you like, set one design as your default, and test it on a real printer. Find it under Store settings → Receipt layouts.
Each receipt design has a paper width that matches a printer registered in Printers, so register your printer first.
Create a receipt design
- 1
Click New receipt
Pick a starting design (see below), name it, and pick its paper width (58mm, 72mm or 80mm).
- 2
Open the designer
Click Create & design to open the full-screen editor with that design already laid out.
- 3
Make it yours
Add, remove and arrange the sections you want — see below. Nothing in a ready-made design is fixed.
- 4
Set it as your default
Back on the Receipt layouts list, set a design as your default so it's the one used for receipts. Only one design can be the default.
Ready-made designs
You don't have to build a receipt from scratch. New receipt opens with four choices, each shown as a preview of the actual printed receipt:
- Classic receipt — your logo, business details and VAT number, the order number, date and server, the items, totals, a VAT breakdown, a thank-you and a QR code. This is the one selected by default.
- Compact receipt — a short, paper-saving slip: your name, the order and date, the items and the total. Good for a busy bar or takeaway.
- Table service bill — the table, covers, server and time at the top, then the items, totals, a VAT breakdown and your address and phone at the foot.
- Blank — empty paper, if you'd rather lay it out yourself.
- From a photo (beta) — take a picture of a receipt you already use and we rebuild the layout for you. See below.
Whichever you pick, everything on it can be changed, moved or removed in the designer afterwards.
To read a saved design properly without opening it, click the eye on its row in the list. That shows the receipt at full paper size, exactly as it prints.
Copy a receipt you already have (beta)
Pick From a photo in the New receipt window, choose a picture of an existing receipt, and we read it and build a matching design — your business name, the order details, the item list, the totals and the VAT table all become the right kind of block, filled in with your own details.
Heads up
This is a beta and it might not work. We're reading a photograph with AI, so it can misread a word, miss a line, or put something in the wrong place. Always look over the result and fix anything it got wrong before you use the design. Nothing is sent to a printer until you choose to.
For the best chance of a good read: photograph the receipt flat and straight on, in good light, with the whole receipt in frame. A PDF works too.
You can only do this when you create a receipt, not on one you've already built — so if you want to try it on an existing design, make a new one from the photo and compare the two.
What you can add
The canvas is built from sections you arrange to suit your receipt. You can add and remove blocks such as:
- Text — your own wording, for a header or a thank-you line.
- Fields — details pulled in automatically, such as your business name, address, VAT number, the order number, date and time, and the table or cashier.
- Items — the order's line items.
- Totals — subtotal, tax and total.
- VAT — a VAT breakdown per rate.
- Dividers and spacers — lines and gaps to space the layout out.
- QR codes, barcodes and images — including an uploaded image.
Each block can be aligned and sized, and sections can be reordered.
Moving things around
Drag anything on the receipt to move it. That includes a block sitting inside a column of a side-by-side section — grab it on the receipt itself and drop it wherever you want, including into the other column. Dropping on a block puts the one you're dragging above it, so you can land it in an exact position rather than always at the bottom.
A whole section moves too: hover it and drag the handle in its little toolbar.
Note
A block you've left empty won't have anything to grab on the paper, because nothing prints for it. Move that one from the panel on the right.
Undo a change
Pressed something you didn't mean to? Use the undo arrow next to Preview, or press ⌘Z (Ctrl+Z on Windows). The arrow next to it redoes, as does ⇧⌘Z. This covers everything in the designer — moving blocks, adding and deleting them, and changing text.
While you're typing in a text box, ⌘Z undoes your typing as usual rather than the whole receipt.
The live preview
The designer shows a preview as you work. You can pick a location and a menu at the bottom so the preview fills in with your real business and location details plus a sample order, instead of placeholder text.
Note
The preview is rendered by the same engine that prints the real receipt, so what you see in the designer is what comes out on paper.
Test it on a real printer
Use the print icon on a receipt to test it on real paper. The test runs a quick readiness check and tells you what to fix if it isn't ready:
- whether the chosen printer has a network address set,
- whether a till is set to print to that printer,
- and whether that till is online.
If a till is offline, you can queue the test and it prints as soon as the till is back on your venue Wi-Fi. The receipt prints on whichever till you've assigned that printer to under Devices.
Duplicating, renaming and deleting
Each design has actions to duplicate, rename and delete it. Deleting a design can't be undone.
The new Receipt layouts page
We're rolling out a new version of Receipt layouts, one venue at a time. If yours has it, the list page and the designer look different and do a little more. Your saved receipts are exactly the same, and they print exactly the same.
The list
Each receipt is a row with a small picture of the paper, its paper width, how many elements it has and when it was last changed. Your default is marked Default. Click a row to open it.
At the end of each row: Preview at full size (the eye), Test print, Set as default receipt, Duplicate (the copy is named "(copy)", then "(copy 2)" and so on), Rename and Delete. The default receipt has no Delete: make another receipt the default first.
Above the list, Search receipts narrows it as you type, Export downloads the list you can see as a spreadsheet file (CSV), and ticking two or more rows lets you delete them together. The default receipt can't be ticked.
New receipt opens the same choice of starting designs, with Blank last, plus a name and the paper width.
The designer
- Components (left): everything a receipt can show. Every detail has its own entry — Business name, VAT number, Order number, Table and so on — so type in the search box to find one. Click an entry to add it, or drag it onto the paper. A tick shows what's already on the receipt.
- The paper (middle): your receipt, drawn exactly as it prints. Move the pointer over it to see how it is built: each section gets an outline and a small tab with its name, and each block shows its name. Click a block to select it, drag it to move it. The buttons above the paper switch between sample orders, so you can see a short bill and a long one. Under the paper, 1 column, 2 columns and 3 columns add a section.
- Settings (right): one level at a time. With nothing selected you see the whole receipt and its sections. Click a section for its columns, alignment and spacing. Click a block for its own settings. The arrow at the top goes back up a level.
- Preview on paper shows the receipt printed for three sample orders side by side. On the right you can pick a menu and real items to see a real bill.
Changes save by themselves a moment after you make them; Save saves straight away. Undo and redo are next to it.
Every setting you change shows on the paper, and the block you changed flashes an outline so you can see where.
- If a detail has nothing to print on the sample order you're looking at (Covers on a bar tab, say), the paper shows a placeholder with a link such as show on Table bill. Click it to see the block on an order that has it.
- If you switch a setting on and this sample order can't show it, the designer moves to one that can and tells you, with Back to the order you were on.
- A setting that can't do anything where the block sits isn't offered, and the designer says why. Medium and Large text are greyed out inside a column, and a section's Align only appears when the section has text or details to align.
- Modifiers: Together / One per line sets how the options chosen on an item print. Options print on the receipt after payment, not on the bill, so the bill samples show none. The Paid receipt sample shows them, and the designer moves there when you switch the setting on.
- The Paid receipt sample is drawn as a receipt printed after payment: it ends with TOTAL and how it was paid rather than Amount Due, and Covers and Cashier are blank on it, because a paid receipt doesn't carry them.
Note
Line items, Totals, VAT breakdown, QR code, Barcode, Logo and Medium or Large text print across the full width of the paper, so they need a 1-column section. If you try to put one in a column, the designer tells you and leaves the receipt as it was.
Tip
Prefer the old page? Click Classic, next to Export on the list, or next to the receipt's name in the designer. Back to the new one returns you.
