Service charges

Create a named service charge as a percentage, a fixed amount or a charge per person, then apply it to a menu. Configuration only today — the till does not add it to a bill yet.

A service charge is an extra you add to a bill — a service charge, a cover charge, and so on. You create a named charge once under Store settings → Service charges, then apply it to a menu.

Heads up

Service charges are configuration only today — the till does not add them to a bill yet. You can create a charge and apply it to a menu, and that setup is saved and ready. But no charge is currently added to an order, shown on the bill, or printed on a customer's receipt. Applying charges at the point of sale is still to come, so nothing you set up here reaches a customer in the meantime.

Create a service charge

  1. 1

    Open Service charges

From the sidebar, go to Store settings → Service charges.

  2. 2

    Click New charge

Name it — for example Service or Cover charge.

  3. 3

    Choose how it's calculated

Pick one of the three types below.

  4. 4

    Set the value and create

Enter the rate or amount, then click Create.

The three charge types

  • Percentage — a percentage of the bill. Enter a rate, for example 12.5. The rate can't be more than 100%.
  • Fixed amount — a flat amount added to the bill. Enter the amount in pounds, for example 1.50.
  • Per person — an amount charged for each person. Enter the amount per person in pounds.

Applying a charge to a menu

This is the step that's easy to miss: a charge isn't applied on this page — it's applied per menu. A banner at the top of the Service charges page says the same and links you to your menus.

After creating a charge, open a menu, go to its Settings → Service charge, and pick the charge to apply it there.

Note

A charge is only attached to the menus you pick it on. Creating a charge here doesn't attach it anywhere on its own.

Editing and deleting

On the Service charges page, click a charge to expand it and change its name, type or value, then Save. To remove one, use the bin icon and confirm — deleting a charge also detaches it from any menu that was using it.
