Modes
How a device behaves — a saved set of capabilities that you build once and assign to devices.
A mode is how a device behaves. It's a saved set of capabilities — which screens and actions a device shows — that you build once and assign to devices. Each device runs exactly one mode. Manage them under Store settings → Modes.
Building a mode once and assigning it to many devices means a coffee window, a restaurant floor and a bar can each run the layout that suits them, without configuring every device by hand.
Built-in modes
There are built-in modes and any custom modes you create. In the modes list each row carries a badge so you can tell them apart at a glance: built-in modes show a grey Default badge, and modes you've made show a solid Custom badge. Both are fully editable — open a built-in and change its capabilities to fit your setup. Built-in modes can't be deleted (so you always have a starting point to fall back to); use Duplicate on a row if you'd rather work from a fresh copy.
- Standard — counter, pay-first. Lands on the keypad; no tables or tabs.
- Bar — counter selling with open tabs. Lands on the menu.
- Restaurant — tables, tabs, order-at-table and the order centre.
- Connected — pay-at-counter; takes payments dispatched from a till.
The mode jobs
- Create a mode.
- Mode capabilities — the switches that build a mode.
- Mode Quick Actions — the popup on an occupied table.
- Lock a mode with passcodes.
- Delete a mode.
Assigning a mode to a device
A device's mode is set on the device itself, under Store settings → Devices. A device with no mode picked uses Standard. See Set a device's mode, location and printer.
You can also set a default mode per location, so a new device at that site boots into the right mode before anyone picks one — set this on the location's detail page. See The location detail form.
Note
If your account has time and attendance switched on, a Time clock mode option also appears. If you don't see it, it isn't enabled for your account.
Note
If your account has Kitchen display on a till switched on, a Kitchen display mode also appears. It turns a till into a kitchen screen for one station, so it has no capabilities to edit, only its name. See Use a till as a kitchen display.
What's next
- Create a mode.
- Assign your mode to a device.
- Set up passcodes to lock modes and areas.
Note
Open builder (beta). With the visual-builder beta enabled, you can open the builder from two places: the ⋯ menu on any mode in the list, or the Open builder button at the top of the mode's own settings page, next to Preview. Both lead to the same full-screen canvas of that mode's till where you arrange its widgets. It saves drafts as you work; nothing reaches your tills until you press Update tills there.
