Discount scope and limits
Where a discount applies — one site or all of them — and the things discounts deliberately don't do.
Discount scope and limits
A discount is a simple money-off rule your staff apply at the till. This article covers the one setting that controls where it applies, and the limits that are built in by design — so you know what a discount will and won't do before you create one.
Scope: one site or all sites
If you run a single site, every discount you create applies there — there's nothing to choose, so the portal doesn't show a scope control.
If you run more than one site, the discount form shows a Scope setting:
- All sites (the default) — the discount is available on every location's till.
- A single site — pick one location and the discount only appears there.
Each terminal syncs the discounts for the site it is assigned to, plus every All-sites one. So a terminal's list is "my site + all sites" — change a discount's scope and the tills pick it up on their next sync. A terminal that hasn't been assigned to a site yet keeps seeing everything; assign it under Settings → Devices to scope it.
You can't scope one discount to some sites but not others. If you want a discount on two of your three sites, create it twice — once scoped to each.
What discounts deliberately don't do
Discounts are intentionally kept simple. A few things people often look for are not part of a discount, and that's by design, not a bug:
- No time window. There's no built-in happy-hour or date range. Staff apply a discount when they need it, or you gate it behind a passcode so only the right people can. See Discount types and passcodes.
- No category or item filter. A discount is a money-off rule on the sale, not a rule that only bites certain items or categories. Choose the amount or percentage; staff decide when to apply it.
- But there IS a "who" limit. If you use staff roles, each discount has a Who can apply this list, so a "Locals 10%" can be open to every role while a "Manager 50%" is only on for managers. A signed-in staff member only sees the discounts their role was given. See Set up discounts.
Note
Need an offer that only runs at certain times? Require a passcode and brief your team on when to use it — that's how happy-hour-style offers are run today.
