Redeem a gift card at the till

Take a gift card as payment — scan or type the code, and handle partial or over-value cards.

Take the gift card during the payment step, after the order is rung up.

Tip

Quick reference for staff

  • Gift card code — a 14-character code in the form GC-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX (for example GC-ABCD-EFGH-IJKL). The customer has it on a printed slip, in an email, or in a wallet pass.
  • QR code — the same card as a scannable square, in the customer's email or wallet pass. Scanning it is the same as typing the code.
  • When to apply it — during the payment step, after the items are rung up, not before.
  1. 1

Ring up the order as normal

Add the items to the cart so you're on the payment/review screen with a total to charge.

  2. 2

    Tap Apply gift card

On the cart, tap Apply gift card (below the items). It opens a sheet to take the card.

  3. 3

    Scan or type the card

Tap Scan QR code and point the camera at the customer's QR (from their email or wallet pass) — or tap Enter code manually and type the GC-XXXX-XXXX-XXXX code. The field upper-cases and strips spaces for you.

  4. 4

    Confirm and take any remainder

The card is applied and a Gift card line shows the amount coming off (e.g. -£15). Finish payment as normal.

To remove a card before paying, tap the X on its line in the cart.

When the card doesn't match the bill exactly

A gift card is a single-use voucher, so it's spent in one go. What happens depends on how its value compares to the bill:

  • Card less than the bill (partial payment). The card pays its full value, and you charge the rest. The pay button shows the remaining amount, e.g. Charge £8. Tap it to take the remainder on card or cash. Example: a £15 card on a £23 bill — the card covers £15 and you charge £8.
  • Card more than the bill (overpayment). The card pays the whole bill and the pay button shows Use gift card · £X — no terminal swipe needed. Tap it to complete the sale.

Heads up

The leftover on an over-value card is not kept. If a £25 card is used on a £20 bill, the card pays the £20 and is then marked used — the remaining £5 is not stored for a later visit, and the card can't be used again. Single-use cards have no running balance. Make customers aware before they spend a card on a smaller bill.
