QR ordering FAQ

Quick answers on branding, shortcodes vs per-table codes, paying on the phone, which menu shows, and reprinting codes.

The short questions that come up about QR ordering, with links to the full article.

Do I need branding for QR ordering to work?

No. Branding is optional styling, not a prerequisite. QR ordering works without it — customers just see a generic layout. Setting your colours and logo (under Account & settings → Branding) makes the ordering page look like yours, but nothing is blocked if you skip it. See Table ordering by QR code.

What does the customer's browser tab say?

Your site's name, then the journey — Camden Lock: Order for an ordering code, Camden Lock: Menu for a menu-viewer code. The tab icon is the logo on the branding profile that code uses.

The name is the location's business name (not its internal nickname), and it's the site the order will be attributed to. If no site can be resolved — a multi-site account on a code that isn't tied to one venue — the tab falls back to your merchant name rather than naming the wrong place. No logo set means the tab keeps the browser's default; the name still works.

This comes with the new guest ordering journey. On the older page the tab shows the generic Tillable name instead.

What's the difference between a per-table QR code and a shortcode?

  • A per-table QR code is tied to one specific table. When a customer scans it, their order opens a tab on that table, so staff see it in the right place. You manage these under Table Management → Tables.
  • A shortcode is a QR link that isn't tied to a table — handy for a flyer, a poster, or a venue with no table layout. You manage shortcodes on the QR ordering settings page.

Use per-table codes for table service; use a shortcode for general "scan to order" that isn't about a particular table.

Can customers pay on their phone, and what does that need?

Yes, if you choose it. The Order & Pay setting controls this:

  • Pay at the till (the default) — the order is added to the table and your staff take payment as normal. Nothing extra needed.
  • Pay from the phone — the customer pays on their own device. This needs your Tillable payments account (formerly yetipay) connected for online payments, and you choose the test or live environment in the QR ordering settings. Use test to try it, live to take real money.

See Order & Pay — how customers pay.

Which menu do customers see? Why might they see "Ordering isn't available"?

Customers see the menu the scanned code points at, or — if the code isn't tied to a specific menu — the first menu in your Items → Menus list. If you have no menu at all, a scan shows "Ordering isn't available" — create a menu under Items to fix it. See Which menu customers see.

A customer didn't leave their email. Can they still get a receipt?

Yes, and they don't need to ask you. The Order placed screen at the end of ordering offers Email me a receipt: they tap it, type their address, and we send it. If they've already paid, they get the receipt. If they're paying at the till, they get their order confirmation instead, because there's no payment to receipt yet.

The address they type is saved to their customer record, the same as if they had entered it at checkout, so it's there next time you look them up. They can send it a few times in case of a typo, and only while the order is recent.

Can I reprint or rotate a table's QR code?

Yes. On Table Management → Tables, each table with a code shows Copy, Download and Refresh controls:

  • Download gives you a PNG image of the code to print again.
  • Refresh mints a brand-new code and invalidates the old one — so any already-printed copies of that table's code stop working. Only refresh when you actually want to retire the old code (for example if a printed one was misused). See Add a QR code to a table.
