Items FAQ
Quick answers on modifiers, VAT, upsells, per-menu prices and what staff see at the till.
Short answers to the questions merchants ask most about Items. Each links to the full article.
Is there a faster way to type in a lot of products?
Yes. On a new product, Save & add another (next to Save) saves it and opens a fresh blank one with the cursor already in Name, so you never go back to the list. When adding modifier options, typing a name and pressing Enter opens the next option ready to type. ⌘ + Enter (Windows: Ctrl + Enter) saves either editor. See Create a product and Modifiers and options.
How do I make a "no onions" option?
Create a modifier group (e.g. "Onions") with two options — "With Onions" and "No Onions" — both with Extra (£) = 0, and Allow multiple selections off. Attach it to the burger. See Modifiers and options.
Should an upsell side be a modifier, a bundle, or a separate product?
A modifier if it's an optional add-on to one product ("Add a side +£2"); a bundle if it's a fixed meal deal at one price; a separate product if it's sold on its own. Full guide: Add-ons: bundle, modifier, or separate product?.
Do modifiers show up on every menu automatically?
Yes. Modifiers are attached to the product, so they appear wherever that product is sold — every menu, and on till, QR and click-and-collect — with no per-menu setup. See Build a menu.
Can a modifier option cost more or less on one menu?
Yes. Open the group under Items → Modifiers, click Different price on some menus under the option and type that menu's price. Empty means the option's normal price. See Modifiers and options.
Can I charge a different price in my online shop?
Yes. Turn on Show in shop on the product and an Online shop price (£) box appears. Fill it in and the shop charges that; leave it blank and the shop uses the base price. Nothing else moves — the till, QR ordering and click-and-collect all keep charging the base price.
Blank means "use the base price", not "free". If you actually want it free in
the shop, type 0.
My menu price override isn't showing in the shop
It won't. Per-menu price overrides do not reach the online shop — the shop prices from the product itself. If you want a different price in the shop, set the Online shop price on the product. See Per-menu price override.
Are VAT rates the same on the till, QR and click-and-collect?
Yes. A product's VAT rate is global — identical on every channel. If you need different rates per channel, create separate products. See VAT rates.
Does turning off "VAT registered" stop charging VAT?
No. The VAT registered toggle (under Account) only controls what shows on receipts. VAT is still calculated from each item's rate. To actually charge no VAT on an item, set its rate to No VAT / 0%. See Company details.
What VAT rate do I use for cold takeaway?
Cold takeaway food is often zero-rated (set the item to No VAT) — but there are exceptions, and it's an HMRC question, not a Tillable one. See Which VAT rate applies (UK hospitality) and HMRC VAT Notice 709/1.
Do modifier options cost extra?
Only if you give them one. Each option has an Extra (£) field; leave it at 0 and the option changes the order line but not the price. See Modifiers and options.
Can a product have no fixed price?
Yes. For something with a name but an amount that changes every time — machine takings going into the till, a day-rate, a deposit — switch on Price is set at the till on the product. Staff tap it, a keypad opens, and they type the amount. It sells on the till only and is left out of offers. See Product price and VAT.
Is the base price gross or net?
Gross — you enter the price the customer pays, VAT included. Tillable derives the VAT breakdown from the rate. You never enter a net price. See Product price and VAT.
Will the till show options when staff tap an item?
Usually. When staff select a product that has modifier groups, a selection screen appears so they pick the options; the line price updates live as paid options are chosen.
The exception is a group set to Show on the till instead of a pop-up — its choices are buttons down the left-hand side rather than rows in the screen, and if it's the product's only group there's no selection screen at all. See Modifiers and options. For the till-side walkthrough, see Running the till.
Can one product ask for its modifiers differently from the rest of its category?
Yes, if Modifier flows is switched on for your venue. Open the product, and in the On the till part of Modifier groups use Override flow or Override order. Only that product changes. The rest of the category keeps the category's setting. See Create a product.
Can I skip the pop-up for a simple yes/no option?
Yes, if the group has one or two options. Turn on Show on the till instead of a pop-up on the group and its choices become buttons in the till's left-hand column, above the size buttons. Staff tap the option, then the product — the same gesture as ringing a half pint — and the button clears itself afterwards.
With Modifier flows switched on for your venue, this switch is called Corner key, and it works the same way.
Three or more options stays a pop-up, and only one group per product can use it. Both limits keep that column readable. See Modifiers and options.
I hid a product from the till, but it's still there
Hiding from a channel takes effect on your terminals once they're on the current app version — the online channels (click-and-collect, QR and your shop) update straight away. If a product is still on a till after you switched Show on till off, check that terminal's app version first.
There's a second, more common cause: the product is hidden from the channel but the whole menu is still running at that site. Availability and menus are separate switches — see Where a product sells.
A shandy uses half a pint of beer. Can the stock count know that?
Yes, if you track stock with recipes. On the modifier option, set Main item used to 0.5 — it tells the stock count that one of these only drinks half the product. Then give the Shandy option its own recipe for the lemonade that makes up the other half, and tick follows the size of the drink on it so a half shandy takes half of each.
Main item used never changes the price. If you charge pint price for a shandy, leave the price alone. Full walkthrough in Modifiers and options.
My mixers are sold as options. Can reports show them as drinks sold?
Yes. On the option (for example Dash Pepsi in your Mixers group), set Counts as product to your Dash Pepsi product. Every vodka with Dash Pepsi then also reports one Dash Pepsi sold, and the mixer's price moves from the vodka to it — your totals stay the same. Stock is not affected: set what the mixer uses in the option's own recipe.
