Running the till
The portal-vs-device split — what you configure here, what happens on the terminal, and how the two stay in sync.
The till has two halves — the portal (here) is where you configure it, and the terminal is where the day happens. This page explains how the two fit together. For the whole area's index, see Till — start here.
What the portal does vs what the device does
- The portal (here) is where you configure: your menus and items, your tables, your floor plans and sections, who can do what (staff roles), and the screens a terminal shows while it waits to take a payment.
- The terminal (the device) is where the day happens: staff ring up items, open tabs, send food to the kitchen, and take card or cash.
When you change something in the portal — add a table, edit a price, make a new floor plan — the terminals pick it up within seconds. You don't reinstall or restart anything.
What you set up in the portal
To get the till working for table service, you'll typically set up, in this order. Each item appears in the sidebar — click the named section, then the item below it.
- Your items and menus — under Items. Nothing sells until it's on a menu.
- Your tables — under Table Management → Tables. These become the tiles staff tap on the terminal. See Set up your tables.
- Sections and floor plans — click Table Management in the sidebar, then Sections or Floor plans, so the tables are grouped and laid out the way your room is. See Floor plans and Sections.
- Who can do what — under Staff, so each person only sees the actions their role allows.
Optionally, once your venue has been switched on for it, you can also choose how an item's options open on the till — today's pop-up, a step-by-step pop-up, a sheet from the bottom, a button grid, a tray under the menu or a column sheet — per category, with a per-product override, and give option groups a colour and a Staff must pick rule. Set it on the category's Modifier flow card and the product's On the till section. What staff see for each layout is in Ringing up items with options.
Tip
New to table service? Follow Set up table service from scratch — it sequences all of the above end to end and ends with a "verify on your terminal" check.
Refunds and voids
Refunds and voids happen on the terminal, not in the portal — there's no refund button in the back office. Whether a staff member can do them is controlled by their staff role and the device's mode. See Refunds and voids for the policy and Process a refund or void on the terminal for the device steps.
Printed till reports
From the till, staff can print two paper reports straight from the terminal — no portal step needed: a Sales report (takings, how they were paid, and refunds) and a Product sales report (everything sold in the period, biggest earner first). Reach both from Till admin → Reports, where you can also pick the period and which till(s) to include, and see an on-screen preview before you print.
Every till has the Till admin panel, so this is the only place reports print from. The Sales report used to have a second home on the Records screen; that print button is gone, and Till admin → Reports replaces it with more control, not less. You can restrict who gets to Reports — see Who can see what in Till admin.
These reports are generated fresh on our servers each time you print, so they always reflect the latest data — there's no separate "reconciled" portal version to compare against, and a gift card used as part of a payment is shown as its own line rather than folded into the card total. For a browsable, filterable view of the same period covering every merchant location, see The sales log and Reports — start here.
