Using the till — a staff walkthrough
The orientation for what staff see and tap on the terminal, split into a counter sale and a table-service sale.
Running the till is the big picture. This page is the orientation for what your staff see and tap on the device itself.
What a terminal shows is set by its mode (see Modes) — the mode decides which screens and buttons appear. So not every device shows every button; a counter-only till won't show a floor plan, for example.
Note
The till is a paid module and the table-service parts also need Table service switched on for your account. If a screen described here is missing, see Till troubleshooting.
Two shapes of sale
- Counter sale walkthrough — the simplest flow, for a coffee window or a counter.
- Table-service sale walkthrough — tables grid, open a tab, add items, get to payment. Where enabled, the floor plan also has a whiteboard-style Board view — see The live floor plan.
Building the order
- Ringing up items with options — modifiers and choices.
- Sending to the kitchen — fire items to the KDS or printer.
If you ring up the same item across more than one round, the order shows it as one combined line with the quantities added together (a "3 × Coca Cola" rather than separate "1 ×" and "2 ×" lines), so a long bill stays easy to read. The kitchen still gets each round as you fire it.
Where a drink is sold in more than one size, the size buttons sit under the categories and each order line names the size it was rung at. See Drink sizes. Each line also shows the options picked (like Oat milk · Extra shot) and any item note under the name, and a note the guest left on the whole order sits in a yellow Order note banner at the top of the bill.
Getting to payment
- Taking payment on the till — the pay step in full.
- Splitting a bill — share a bill across several payments.
Cash drawer
If your venue takes cash, the till can track your physical drawer. In the till's Settings you'll find:
- Cash drawer — the hardware section: mark a drawer as connected to your receipt printer and test-open it. With a drawer connected, it pops automatically whenever you confirm a cash payment — even offline.
- Cash drawer ledger — turn on shift tracking: open the drawer with a counted float, let every cash sale record itself, note money you put in or take out, and close the shift with a count to see over/short.
- Cash drawer sessions — the list of current and past drawer shifts with their full movement log.
To open the drawer outside a sale, go to Till admin → Cash drawer on the till and use Open drawer there. Each press is noted in the ledger as a "no sale" entry when a shift is open.
This used to be a till icon on the top bar. It moved behind Till admin, so opening the drawer outside a sale is a manager action rather than a one-tap one for anyone standing at the till. Pause kitchen moved the same way, and is now under Till admin → Kitchen.
Who can reach it is up to you — see Who can see what in Till admin.
Quick glossary
- Open a tab — start a running bill on a table (or a free-standing bar tab). Staff tap a table tile and confirm the covers.
- Add items — tap menu items onto the order, adjusting quantity and modifiers.
- Fire / send to the kitchen — push the chosen items to your kitchen display or printer with the Kitchen action.
- Take payment — settle the bill at the pay step, by card or cash, in one go or split.
- Records — the device's list of past sales, where staff resend a receipt or refund a settled sale. Every sale shows its order number, a table's included (Table 7 · #8413); search #8413 to jump to it. If you run more than one site, a device shows the sales for its own site (plus any older sale recorded before sites were tracked). Single site? It shows everything, as it always has.
