Set up table service from scratch
The end-to-end order for wiring up table service — locations, sections, tables, floor plans, modes, tabs, QR.
The pieces of table service — locations, sections, tables, floor plans, modes, tabs, QR codes — are each documented on their own. This guide is the spine: the order to do them in for a new venue. When you're done, use Verify table service on a terminal to confirm it works.
Step 0 — Check table service is switched on
Table service and the till are paid modules. Before anything else, confirm they're on for your account — you can tell from the sidebar:
- Till and its children (Floor plans, Sections) appear only when the Till and Table service features are on.
- Table Management (with Tables Served, Tables, Tabs) appears with Table service.
- Table Ordering QR Code appears with QR ordering.
If those aren't in your sidebar, they aren't enabled yet — ask your account manager. For the symptom-by-symptom version, see Tables, Tabs, Floor plans or QR settings don't appear.
The order to set things up
Do these in sequence — each step uses what the one before created:
- 1
Locations
If you run more than one site, set up your locations first (Account & settings → Locations) — sections, tables and floor plans all belong to a location. With a single location it's chosen for you.
- 2
Items and menus
Build your items and menus under Items. Nothing can be rung up until it's on a menu, and QR ordering needs a default menu too.
- 3
Sections
Group your tables into sections (Bar, Dining room…) under Table Management → Sections. Sections feed the floor plan builder's tray. See Sections.
- 4
Tables
Create your tables under Table Management → Tables (or let a section create a batch for you). These become the tiles staff tap. See Set up your tables.
- 5
Floor plan
Lay the tables out on a floor plan under Table Management → Floor plans, and make sure it's assigned to the right location. See Floor plans.
- 6
A mode with Floor plan
Under Store settings → Modes, set up (or pick) a mode with the Floor plan and Dine in capabilities, then assign it to the device under Store settings → Devices. See Modes.
- 7
Tabs (optional)
Decide whether terminals run open tabs (running bills) or pay-as-you-go, under Table Management → Tabs. See Open tabs. Day to day, a forgotten tab can be cleared from the Tables page — see Close a tab that got left open.
- 8
QR codes (optional)
If customers will order from their phones, generate per-table QR codes and set how they pay. See Table ordering by QR code.
- 9
PAC campaign (optional)
Set an idle screen to show while a terminal waits to take payment, under Customers → Promotions → Terminal Campaigns. See PAC Campaigns.
What's next
- Verify table service on a terminal — confirm the setup end to end on a device.
- The table journey and its colours — the stages a table moves through during service, and the colours staff see on the live floor plan. Set from the card on Table Management → Floor plans.
- Table Studio: where you see a Table Studio choice above your floor plans list, it sets how tables look and move through their stages by themselves while you are trading.
- Multi-level floor plans (upstairs / downstairs) — if your venue has more than one level.
- Using the till — a staff walkthrough — what staff do next.
- Till troubleshooting — if a step doesn't show on the device.
