Part payment — leave the rest on the tab
Take some of a bill now and leave the rest open on the tab to settle later.
Pay part of the bill lets a table settle some of the bill now and leave the rest open. It needs the Part payment capability on the device's mode (see Modes), and a tab with at least two lines on it — see below.
How it works
Staff choose which items (or how much) to pay; that portion is taken by card or cash, and the remaining items stay on the tab to be paid later. The tab doesn't close until the whole bill is settled.
Every part payment carries the tab's order number, so they're easy to find together in Records: each one shows the table with a letter for the payment and the shared number, such as Table 5a · #8413 and Table 5b · #8413.
Something has to stay on the bill
A part payment is part of the bill, so you can't move everything onto the new bill — at least one item has to stay behind. If you tick every item, Add To New Bill greys out and reads "Leave at least one item behind". Untick something and it comes back.
This matters most when a tab holds only one product. Ringing the same item four times makes a single line of "4 ×", and a part payment can only move a whole line — never 2 of the 4. So a tab with just one line can't be part-paid: take it as a normal payment instead.
On a tab like that, the Part pay button isn't shown at all. It needs two separate lines to work, so rather than let you tap into it and hit a dead end, the till leaves it off until the tab has something to split. Add a second item and it appears.
Where a drink is sold in sizes, each line names its size — Madrí (½ pint) — so you can tell two sizes of the same drink apart when ticking off what a guest is paying for. See Drink sizes. The options picked and any item note show under each line too, and two lines that differ only by an option or a note stay separate, so you can tick the one the guest actually had.
Moving what you've ticked
Once something is ticked, tap the bill you want it on — anywhere in that bill's item list — and everything ticked moves onto it. The Move N selected here button at the bottom of that bill does the same thing. Tapping a bill's title bar still folds it open and shut.
Meal deals move as one
A meal deal shows as a single line — the deal's name, what's in it, and the deal price — with one tick box marked "Moves as one". Ticking it takes the whole deal onto the new bill; you can't part-pay half a deal, because a deal is priced as a deal and its courses have no separate prices of their own. Two of the same deal show as two separate lines, and moving one leaves the other where it is.
Anything on the tab that's already been struck off or paid — including one course of a deal — shows greyed out and stays put, so the rest of the deal can still be moved.
Part payment vs split
These are easy to confuse:
- Pay part of the bill takes some of the bill now and leaves the rest open on the tab to settle later.
- Split order closes the whole bill across several payments in one sitting — everyone pays their share now and the tab closes.
There is now a third thing that sounds like both and is neither. An amount on the split screen lets you key a figure — "he's putting £20 towards it" — but it lives inside Split order, so the rest stays on screen as its own bill and the table closes when everything is paid. It does not leave money owing on the tab for later.
Which one you want:
- Someone is paying and leaving, the rest of the table carries on drinking → Pay part of the bill.
- Everyone is settling up now and one of them is putting in a set figure → Split order, then An amount.
Note
The split screen is being redesigned and the new one is rolling out one venue at a time. On the new screen the choices are three tiles — By item, Evenly, An amount — and you take each bill where it stands, so there is no pay page and no button back to the parts. On the older screen the buttons are Split by item and Split evenly, and the button that takes you back from the pay step to the parts is Back to bill split (it was "Back to partition" until September 2026). Part payment's own screen is the same on both. Splitting a bill says how to tell the two apart.
