Edit or delete a custom field

Rename a field, reorder it, or remove it — and what happens to saved values.

Once a custom field exists, you can rename it, change its Choice options, reorder how it appears, or remove it. Existing values are protected — you won't lose them by renaming or reordering, and even a delete is reversible if you re-create the field with the same key.

For the basics of custom fields — how to add one, the field types, filling one in — see Custom fields.

Rename a field or change its options

Open a field (the pencil icon) to change its label or, for a Choice or Multiple choice field, its options — without losing any saved values.

On the allergen list, the choices show here by their short names — tree_nuts, milk and so on. Guests and staff see the full names instead: Tree nuts, and Dairy for milk.

You can also tick or untick Safety alert (allergen / dietary) here. That flag is what sends a booking's answer to the kitchen ticket, the till's table banner and the diary, so it's worth getting right — see Allergen and occasion custom fields.

Note

A field's internal key is locked once it's created — you can freely change the label, but the key stays fixed so existing values keep their place.

The Dogs and High chairs fields are ordinary fields

The Dogs and High chairs booking widgets create fields called Dogs and High chairs, and you can rename, reorder or delete either exactly like any other. Two things worth knowing before you do.

Change the answer type away from Number and guests stop getting the two-button No dogs / Yes, bringing a dog (or No high chairs / Yes, we need a high chair) control — they get whatever ordinary input the new type uses, and past answers may no longer read properly on the booking. Rename them freely; that only changes the wording, and the heading your guests see follows it.

Delete one while a booking flow still asks that question and the flow's question stops working — see Custom fields for what a deleted field does to a flow that references it.

Reorder fields

Drag fields by the handle to reorder how they appear on forms and profiles. The order you set here is the order staff see when they open a customer to edit them.

Delete a field

Deleting a field removes it from forms and profiles. The values aren't shown any more, but they aren't destroyed: re-create a field with the same key and the old values reappear.

Tip

If you're only tidying up, consider removing the field's Choice options or renaming its label first. A delete is safe (values come back with the same key), but a rename is often what you actually wanted.

What's next

Switches you can change on an existing field

Editing a field also lets you change two switches without recreating it:

  • Safety alert (allergen / dietary) — routes answers to your kitchen, the till banner and the diary.
  • Send to my marketing CRM — includes the field in your HubSpot or Salesforce sync. Off by default, and greyed out on safety alerts, which are never sent.

Turning Send to my marketing CRM off stops the field going out on future syncs. It does not remove values already copied into your CRM — delete those in HubSpot or Salesforce if you need them gone.
